History of Habiganj District:
Habiganj is a district of Sylhet division in North Eastern part of Bangladesh. Habiganj district was named in the name of Syed Habib Ulla, son of Syed Hedayet Ulla who is the founder of Sultani Habeli. Sunamganj and Sylhet districts are situated to the north of Habiganj, Moulvibazar district to the east, Tripura state of India to the south and Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria districts to the west. Habiganj has a total nine upazilas and the education rate of the district is 40.50%. Habiganj was declared a subdivision in 1867. Habiganj was declared a police station in 1893. Habiganj was promoted to district in 1984.
History of Habiganj Court:
Since 1867 Habiganj Sub-Division Headquarters was in Lashkarpur where the first Munsef Court of Habiganj started. Later in 1919 the court building was shifted to Govinda Park in the city. During the British rule, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Munsef Courts were established in Habiganj . Later in 1981, the first Sub-Judge court was created in Habiganj and the first Sub-Judge in that court was Mr. Mantaz Uddin. District Judge Court Building (Old) was constructed in 1984. Later, the foundation stone of the present Habiganj District Judge Court building was laid in 1992 and the building was inaugurated in 2001.
District and Sessions Judge Court Habiganj:
In the year of 1984 after declaration Habiganj as District, the post of Habiganj District and Sessions Judge was created. The first District and Sessions Judge of Habiganj District was Mr. S.M. Abdur Rahman. At present Habiganj District and Session Judge Court has two Additional District and Sessions Judge Courts, two Joint District and Sessions Judge Courts, one Senior Assistant Judge Courts and seven Assistant Judge Courts..
Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal:
At present there are three Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunals in Habiganj District. In 2001, the 1st Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal was established and in 2018, Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal-2 and Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal-3 were established.
Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate:
Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Habiganj was established on 1st November 2007 through separation of judiciary. Mr. Md. Fazlul Haque was the first Chief Judicial Magistrate of Habiganj District. At present the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has one Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, one Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, four Senior Judicial Magistrate Courts including a Ajmiriganj Chowki Court and five Judicial Magistrate Courts. From the date inauguration of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Building in 2017, the overall activities of the court are being conducted in its own building.
Land Survey Tribunal:
Habiganj district has a Land Survey Tribunal which was established in year of 2013. The Land Survey Tribunal has been settling the disputes arising out from the finally published khatian of the revisional survey.
District Legal Aid Office:
District Legal Aid Office started functioning in Habiganj in 2013 and since 2018 District Legal Aid Office is being conducted regularly by District Legal Aid Officer.
Ajmiriganj Chowki Court:
Chowki Court was established in 1983 in Ajmiriganj Upazila of Habiganj to conduct the activities of Munsef Court. In 1992, Ajmiriganj Chowki Court was abolished and transferred to Habiganj Sadar. However, in 2007, one Senior Judicial Magistrate Court was again shifted to Ajmiriganj as Chowki Court. At present, the activities of Ajmiriganj Chowki Court are being conducted in the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court Building there.
Habiganj District Lawyers Association:
Habiganj District Bar Association was formed in the year of 1878. In 1929, the constitution of Habiganj District Bar Association was prepared. Second Chief Justice of Bangladesh Mr. Syed AB Mahmud Hossain was a member of Habiganj District Bar Association. At present the number of members of Habiganj District Lawyers Association is 668.
